RUGBY Borough slipped to their first league defeat of the season after losing 1-0 against Newport Pagnell Town.

Borough fell behind to Nabil Shariff’s early goal and were unable to find an equaliser at Kilsby Lane.

Despite the defeat, Rugby remain top of the United Counties League Premier Division South table.

Coming into the game off the back of six straight league victories, Borough looked to make another fast start.

However, Newport took the lead on 17 minutes when Shariff pounced on a Borough mistake to break the deadlock.

The home side almost drew level shortly before half time as Shaun Ruzvidzo’s shot went just wide of the post.

Borough failed to create a clear-cut opening in the second period on a frustrating afternoon for the league leaders.

Rugby are next in action away at Radford FC in the UCL Cup on Saturday, September 7 with kick-off at 3pm at Selhurst Street.
