Fraudster allegedly posed as police officer to con Rugby pensioner out of over £3,000

A FRAUDSTER has reportedly conned an elderly Rugby man out of thousands of pounds by impersonating a police officer.

On Thursday August 29, a man in his 80s from the Rugby area was allegedly contacted by a man incorrectly claiming to be an officer of the Metropolitan Police.

The man allegedly proceeded to defraud the victim out of over £3,000 cash, which was handed over to a courier under false pretences.

The victim contacted Warwickshire Police after a second call of the same nature was reportedly made on August 30.

A man was subsequently arrested.

Follow-up investigations showed evidence of another victim in Norfolk, who had reported being defrauded out of around £3,500 in a similar fashion.

Mohammed Shahid, 36, from London, has been charged with two counts of fraud by false representation in connection with the incidents.

Shahid will appear at Warwick Crown Court on October 3.
