Lutterworth resident Lauren, who won gold in the women’s quadruple sculls at this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris, was joined by multiple gold-medal-winning swimmer Mark Foster to cut the ribbon at the centre.
The Olympians posed for photographs and chatted with delighted fans, led various sports and fitness activities, and threw down the gauntlet in a fitness challenge – for those brave enough to take part.
And members of Lutterworth Town Council and Harborough District Council (HDC) were treated to a taster session of Boccia – an accessible form of the game petanque.
The centre, formerly known as Lutterworth Sports Centre, held the open day to mark a recent refurbishment, which includes a new gym, refreshed exercise studios, a new soft play area, an enhanced poolside area and a new reception.
Lauren said: “The upgrades are something for the town to be proud of and I really hope people make the most of this amazing facility.
“As an athlete, it’s fantastic to have access to state-of-the-art equipment but this is a refurbishment that will benefit the whole community.”
The centre is run by Everyone Active in partnership with Harborough District Council.
HDC leader Coun Phil Knowles said it was an amazing event.

He added: “It is so rewarding to see families enjoying the upgraded facilities.
“My thanks to our special guests, but also a huge thank you to all who have worked so hard in delivering this wonderfully improved facility.”
Upcoming improvements at the leisure centre in the coming months include the installation of solar panels on the roof to drive down energy costs, and lighting upgrades in the sports hall.
Visitors and regular members are being encouraged to take part in a survey about the upgrades. Visit www.surveymonkey.com/r/Lutterworth to take part.
