TAYO Tucker’s goal earned Rugby Town a point following a 1-1 draw with Coventry Sphinx in a local derby.

Tucker opened the scoring on 39 minutes only for Shay Willock to equalise for Sphinx on 65 minutes at Butlin Road after Callum Woodward had a penalty saved.

The result means Valley sit 14th in the Northern Premier League Midlands table.

Sphinx spurned a glorious chance to take the lead as Kyle Carey blazed a shot over the crossbar when clean through on goal.

However, Valley broke the deadlock six minutes before half time when Tucker finished from close range after good work from Hilton Arthur.

The home side almost doubled their lead shortly after the break as Sphinx goalkeeper Charlie Woods kept out Josh Thomas’s header.

Sphinx won a penalty on 53 minutes after Carey drew a foul in the box only for Paul Hathaway to superbly save Woodward’s spot kick onto the post.

However, the visitors eventually found an equaliser when Willock deftly lifted the ball over a stranded Hathaway and into the corner of the net.

Rugby are next in action away at Wellingborough Town on Tuesday, October 8 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Dog and Duck Ground.
