A MULTI-million pound engineering project to bring ‘game-changing’ ultrafast internet speeds to thousands of homes in the Lutterworth area is nearly complete.
The £16million project by broadband provider Gigaclear to connect more than 2,600 rural residents and business owners in Lutterworth to full fibre broadband is due to finish this month.
Work to connect the town began in June 2023 when engineers began extending Gigaclear’s network from Husbands Bosworth using fibre optic cables.
They have been going street-to-street either digging new trenches or using existing infrastructure such as poles and ducting in order to reach each property.
Senior Project Manager Ben Flanz said Gigaclear was working hard to ensure rural communities such as Lutterworth could access the same fast broadband as larger urban areas.
He said: “From Lutterworth, we’ll be extending our network northwards towards Ullesthorpe, Leire and Sharnford.
“Taking our full fibre to rural communities such as these, that might otherwise have copper or an inferior part fibre broadband connection, fundamentally changes them for the better because it creates choice for the people in those communities about how they work and how they live their lives.”
Full fibre networks use fibre optic cables to carry data at light speed from the home to the point of connection – giving users speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps for upload and download, near limitless bandwidth, and reliable connectivity.
