FOOTBALL - Rugby Town denied at the death by Grantham

RUGBY Town conceded a 95th-minute equaliser in a dramatic 1-1 draw against fellow strugglers Grantham Town despite Caine Elliott opening the scoring in the final minute.

Elliott thought he had won the game for Valley with his 90th minute strike only for Lewis Darlington to level the game for Grantham at the death at South Kesteven Sports Stadium.

Despite the late setback, Valley sit two points above the Northern Premier League Midlands relegation zone.

Rugby’s Trey Charles had the ball in the net with Harrison Nee in an offside position which saw the goal ruled out.

At the other end, Leke Shodunke’s spectacular effort went wide of the post in a first half bereft of chances.

Chances remained at a premium after the break as Charles headed off target while Paul Hathaway comfortably saved Harry Olivant’s shot at the other end.

Valley spurned a golden chance to break the deadlock when Nee somehow failed to turn the ball home from close range after Charles knocked down Ayo Lekuti’s cross.

Moments later, Elliott arrived in the six-yard box to volley home Tayo Tucker’s cross from the left.

However, Grantham equalised five minutes into injury time when Darlington fired a shot through a crowd of bodies from Sam Muggleton’s arrow-like long throw from the left.

Rugby are next in action against Long Eaton United on Saturday, November 23 with kick-off at 3pm at Grange Park.
