TREY Charles scored a late penalty to earn Rugby Town a point in a 1-1 draw away at 10-man Long Eaton United.

Charles scored from the spot two minutes from time to rescue a point after Callum Cocks opened the scoring early on for the home side at Grange Park.

Long Eaton also had goalkeeper Lewis King sent off on 32 minutes after he brought down Charles, denying the striker a goalscoring opportunity in the process.

And the result means Rugby sit inside the Northern Premier League Midlands relegation zone on goal difference.

The home side broke the deadlock after just five minutes when Cocks tapped in from close range after Paul Hathaway spilled Ryan Campbell-Gordon’s low cross.

However, the game turned just past the half-hour mark as Long Eaton stopper King took out Charles as the last man and received a straight red card.

Valley struggled to carve out a clear-cut chance after the break while Cocks hit the bar at the other end as Long Eaton almost doubled their lead.

Charles then saw a goal ruled out for offside before Archie White rounded Hathaway at the other end only to shoot wide.

And the visitors eventually equalised on 88 minutes when Charles converted from the penalty spot after Dan Summerfield drew a foul in the box.

Rugby are next in action against Birmingham City on Tuesday, November 26 in the Birmingham Senior Cup with kick-off at 7.45pm at Butlin Road.
