After ending their winless streak at Lye Town, Rugby Town FC picked up another point on the road as they played out a 1-1 draw at the South Kesteven Sports Stadium on Saturday.
After a wretched run of five straight defeats, Carl Adamsand company now have some breathing space with four points from their last two matches.
After 16 weeks of action, the Valley are now 18th in the Northern Midlands Non League Division One table with 14 points to their name. While they still dangerously hover above the drop zone in the league, the recent results will give Rugby Town the much-needed confidence to steer further away from the relegation area.
Bookmakers still consider Rugby one of the favourites to be relegated this season. Before their victory at Lye Town, they were on a winless streak dating back to August. To see their survival odds getting shorter, they’ll need to string together a longer run of positive results.
With Rugby Town facing a tough challenge against Long Eaton United, even betting sites with free bets may not offer the best odds on an away win, given their opponents’ strong form and higher position in the league.
Still, Rugby’s players must not let their shoulders drop ahead of this daunting away assignment. Adams knows his team are underdogs against a side chasing the top spot in the division. However, David and Goliath stories are common in football, and Rugby’s recent resurgence could boost their confidence even further.
The slippery pitch at Stourbridge Road hindered the flow of the game in their recent win over Lye Town. Rugby still managed to dominate the first half to set the stage for a remarkable away victory, with Josh Thomas heading home Chris Clements’ corner to give the visitors a much deserved lead.
It could have been a bigger lead for the away team, as Trey Charles and Harrison Nee had their chances. But they picked up the pace in the second half and were rewarded when Matt Gardner pounced on the rebound after Paul Hathaway couldn’t hold onto Ewan Edwards’ powerful shot.
Lye were reduced to 10 men when Syrus Warren-Paul was sent off for picking up two yellows. Soon after, Rugby got a penalty when Harrison Nee was fouled in the box by Elliott Ball.
Charles stepped up to the spot and calmly slotted the ball past diving goalkeeper George Barrett. It already felt like an uphill battle for the hosts, but after falling behind, spectators thought Lye’s players would let go of any remaining hope of a comeback.
But even with a player down, Lye kept pushing for an equaliser. Gardner’s shot hit the post, and Hilton Arthur also saw his effort go wide. Elliott and Charles both had golden opportunities but couldn’t capitalise.
Finally Charles did the trick to secure the points in the final minute when he powered clear down the centre of the pitch before finishing past Barrett.
In the following week, Caine Elliott thought he had won it for Rugby when he found the back of the net against Grantham Town in the 90th minute. Tayo Tucker tucked in a delicious cross into the home team’s box and Elliott was there to meet it with an equally stunning volley and silence the crowd.
The Gingerbreads, however, pulled a rabbit out of the hat in the dying moments of the game. In the seventh minute of stoppage time, a long throw found Lewis Darlington in the midst of a packed Rugby box, and somehow, he managed to force the ball into the back of the net amid the chaos.
Adams was left heartbroken as the final whistle blew of course. Two crucial points had slipped through his hands, but once cooler heads prevailed, he could take pride in his team’s performance in front of a hostile audience and expect a similar fiery response from his team at Grange Park.
Even a point against Long Eaton United would go a long way in reviving Rugby’s faltering season. After that match, they face an even tougher challenge when league leaders Quorn visit Butlin Road. Currently, Quorn are 27 points clear of Rugby, with a game in hand. While defeats in the next two matches won’t derail Rugby’s season, they’ll be hoping to put up strong performances and focus on the more winnable fixtures that follow.
