Fund-raising Pancake Day celebrations are a flipping success

A FLIPPING success – participants and spectators at Rugby town centre’s Pancake Day celebrations on Saturday (March 1) have helped to raise funds for a new defibrillator in the town centre.

Several hundred people attended the event, which included pancake races, pancake tossing and throwing, face painting, mini rides, a pancake quiz trail, storytelling, a fancy-dress competition and an appearance from the Rokeby Lion mascot.

All money raised was donated to The OurJay Foundation, a charity founded by Rugby woman Naomi Rees-Issitt following her son Jamie’s death from a cardiac arrest when he was just 18.

Naomi said: “It was an amazing day and a great opportunity to raise funds and awareness around the OurJay Foundation.

“A massive thank you to all those people, businesses that supported the event, along with Rugby Rokeby Lions and Rugby First for organising the event.”

Gill Nelson, President of Rugby Rokeby Lions, said: “We had a brilliant day, and it was great to see so many people come into the town centre and have some fun, while at the same time raising awareness and funds for the OurJay Foundation.

“A massive thank you to all those individuals, families and businesses that took part in the event, and to Rugby First for all their help and support with the organisation.”

Linda Lowne, Rugby First Business Director, said: “We were lucky with the weather and so pleased with how the day went and the numbers of people that joined us.

“It was also a great opportunity to raise funds for the OurJay Foundation and a new town centre defibrillator.

“A special thanks to Rugby Rokeby Lions for organising the event, Rugby Borough Council for their continued support and for all those businesses that got involved.”
