A PASSION for the planet has won youngsters and staff at Nature Trails Day Nursery in Cawston another major environmental accolade.
The Coventry Road nursery has been awarded the prestigious ‘Green Flag with Distinction’ – part of the international Eco-Schools scheme – for ta fifth successive year.
The accolade, which is the highest achievement in the programme involving children across 74 countries, recognises sustainable initiatives in nursery, which include growing herbs and vegetables to be used in homemade meals, crafting with natural and recycled materials, nature hunts and taking part in litter picking sessions around their local area.
With a focus on biodiversity, healthy living, nursery grounds and marine life as their key themes over the past year, Nature Trails were praised by Eco-Schools for their dedication, with celebrations including a Steve Irwin Day, gardening activities, sustainable improvements and their involvement with nursery families to extend learning opportunities at home.
Nature Trails also has its own dedicated Eco-Committee, which is made up of a number of pre-school children and staff who take a lead role in ensuring the rest of nursery is environmentally considerate by ensuring resources like paper are not wasted, taps are not left running, lights are switched off where not being used and that knowledge is shared.
Nature Trails spokeswoman Georgina Ross-Barnard said: “We are incredibly proud to have achieved the Green Flag with Distinction for the fifth consecutive year. It reflects the hard work, enthusiasm and commitment of our children, colleagues and families in making sustainability a core part of everyday nursery life.
“At Nature Trails, we believe that fostering a love for nature and a sense of responsibility for the planet from an early age can have a lasting impact – and this award is a celebration of that.”
