Yarn-bombers to turn Rugby into a knitted Wonderland

CURIOUSER and curiouser – a community of crafters aim to spread joy around Rugby by ‘yarn-bombing’ the town in celebration of a literary classic.

Rugby Yarn Bombers are preparing to launch their first extravaganza of displays by celebrating the 160th anniversary of Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland.

For four weeks, over 30 knitted scenes from the Alice stories will appear in shop windows and public spaces, inspired by the world created by former Rugby School pupil Lewis Carroll.

Nearly 100 bollards will be decorated with handmade roses, 40 giant playing cards will be scattered around the town, over 50 trees will wear colourful coats, and curious characters will peek out from unexpected places.

Ceri Line, the event’s lead organiser, said: ““It’s about joy, really – joy in making, joy in community, and joy in turning heads when someone rounds a corner and sees a nonsense sign or colourful character.”

“It’s more than a spectacle; it’s a statement. It’s proof that a community, given encouragement and just enough nonsense, can stitch together something quite extraordinary.”

Preview exhibits will be on display at Art at the Alex in James Street as part of the Warwickshire Open Studios Summer Art Weeks.

The Wonderland displays will take to the streets from July 12 to August 9. Trail maps will be available from Wild and Free in Bank Street.
