A CEREMONY in Rugby will mark 80 years since the end of the Second World War later this month.

Members of local branches of The Royal British Legion will hold a Sunset Service to remember the events of VJ Day – August 15, 1945.

To mark the date, Rugby will remember all who took part in the Far East campaigns – often referred to as ‘The Forgotten Army’ – and will also remember those who were prisoners of war during that time.

Led by a piper and members of the Brass Band of Central England, contingents of serving members of the armed forces, cadet units and representatives of local organisations will parade to Hillmorton War Memorial for a service led by Rev Steve Gold of St John the Baptist Church. The Lamp of Peace will be lit and a beacon will be lit as the sun sets.

The ceremony will be attended by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire Dr Eric Wood OBE, the High Sheriff of Warwickshire Mrs Karen Lynch MBE, and the Mayor of Rugby, Coun Barbara Brown.

All are welcome to join the event by gathering at Hillmorton War Memorial at 8.45pm on Friday August 15. Attendees are asked to bring a tea-light to light the memorial in remembrance.

Following the ceremony, the Hillmorton Ex-Servicemen’s Club will host an evening of entertainment with a South Pacific theme.
