RUGBY Welsh produced a valiant performance with just 11 players in a 26-3 defeat against Stamford College Old Boys.

Despite playing with four less players due to injuries and unavailability, Rugby produced a proud display at Uffington Road.

The result means Rugby sit 11th in the Counties 3 Midlands East (South North) table.

Despite only having 11 players available, including two 17-year-old’s, Rugby took the decision to play against a 15-man Stamford side.

The visitors almost took a shock lead when Jack Taylor intercepted a pass inside his own half only for Stamford’s covering defence to prevent a try.

Stamford eventually took the lead midway through the first half with an unconverted try before crossing again soon after for a converted score.

However, Rugby responded with a penalty courtesy of Charlie Kirby’s well-struck kick between the posts.

The visitors played with 10-men for 20 minutes owing to an injury to Harry Wray as he bravely returned to the field despite hobbling around the pitch.

Stamford scored their third try shortly before half time and eventually crossed for a bonus point try after the break.

The referee ended the game early on health and safety grounds as Rugby battled bravely throughout to only lose by a 23-point margin.

Rugby are next in action against Bedworth in the Warwickshire Vase on Saturday, September 27 with kick-off at 3pm at Alwyn Road.
