Alternative Sounds Volume 2 from Coventry and Warwickshire musicians

Rugby Editorial 15th Jun, 2018   0

MUSICIANS old and new from across Coventry and Warwickshire feature on Alternative Sounds: Volume Two.

The 21-track compilation is the second full-length release on Coventry Music Museum’s own label, following naturally enough from Alternative Sounds; Volume One released last September.

The album is dedicated to the memory of local music stalwarts Rod Felton, who died in 2014, and Johnny “Wild Boy” Thomson who passed away a year earlier. Both appear on three of the tracks included on the album,

The album includes Wild Boys’ We’re Only Monsters, written by Roddy Byers of the Specials; The Flys’ Program, penned by Hazel O’Connor’s brother Neil; and Warriors of the Dystotheque’s We’re Taking Control featuring Pop Will Eat Itself.

Other artists on board include We Are A Communist; Mysterious Monks; I; Digital Dinosaurs; Engram; Resurrection Men; Tracey Skarzynska “She-Devil-She-Machine; Octogoth; Blush; Stress; Stavely Makepeace; Polly Bolton; King of the Alps; Keith Fabrique & the Missing Links; Courtiers of Fashion; and Morocco Dave.

Sales from the album – named in homage to the “Alternative Sounds” fanzine which ran for 18 editions between 1979 and 1981, and which was edited by the producer of the compilation Martin Bowes – will raise funds for a variety of local Coventry and Warwickshire organisations promoting and helping local musicians.

A spokesman said: “Each album contains gems which few listeners will have previously heard. Some are rare or lesser known tracks by established artists from Coventry & Warwickshire. Others are by talented local emerging artists.

“Yet others tell important parts of the local music story, being by artists who were expected to make it big but didn’t quite, and by cult and influential bands.

Further volumes in the series are set to follow.
