JANE Austen gets a musical makeover at Stratford Artshouse.
Chamber Opera Tours presents its original musical adaptation of the author’s final novel Persuasion on Monday July 24.
The production – which commemorates the 200th anniversary of Austen’s death and the novel’s publication – features a chamber orchestra with Celtic and period instruments, authentic costuming and sets, and world-champion Irish dancers.
Written at the height of her literary career, Persuasion is a compelling love story. Anne Elliot has rejected a proposal of marriage from the one man she truly loved, Captain Frederick Wentworth. She was persuaded by her godmother that Captain Wentworth was unworthy, but after a separation of nearly a decade, he returns from sea with both rank and fortune. Anne is nearly an old maid and her once rich family faces bankruptcy. Can Anne win him back? Can he forgive her? Can their lost love be rekindled?
Chamber Opera Tours is a professional, not-for-profit opera company devoted to making great opera affordable and presenting operas in English in intimate settings. Distinguished by top conductors and orchestral players, Chamber Opera Tours have been highly praised by both critics and audience members alike.
