Lots of Ludwig at this year's Leamington Music Festival

Rugby Editorial 16th Jan, 2020 Updated: 16th Jan, 2020   0

THERE will be lots of Ludwig at this year’s Leamington Music Festival

Booking is now open for the festival, running from May 1 to 5, which will be joining in the world-wide celebrations this year celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven.

The festival will feature some less familiar works by the great composer alongside popular masterpieces like the Emperor Concerto, the Archduke Piano Trio and Hammerklavier Sonata. There are also pieces by other composers who Beethoven met.

The festival will also have a notable Czech element represented by visiting musicians and composers – continuing the Leamington link going back to the Czech Free Army days based in the town during the Second World War.

Two works by Leamington-based composer Howard Skempton will be performed, and the English music theme is carried over to a Festival Extra event on May 17 when the baritone Roderick Williams performs a programme of English music at the King’s Hall in Warwick.

There will be a last chance to see and her the acclaimed violinist Tasmin Little, who will be accompanied by the Russian pianist Andrey Gugnin. Tasmin is retiring from the concert stand at the end of the summer. She performed to a full house in the 2019 Leamington Music Festival.

Festival organiser Richard Phillips said: “For the 105th festival that I have created or directed, of which 31 have been over the first weekend in May, I hope we will again attract music lovers from all over the UK to come together with our enthusiastic local followers. The festival always attracts new audiences too.”
