Hospital bosses plan new operating theatres for St Cross

A ‘WORLD class’ suite of six new operating theatres could come to St Cross Hospital.

University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust revealed plans to create six new state-of-the-art theatres at its Annual General Meeting.

Bosses say the new suite would increase the number and range of surgical procedures that can be carried out at the hospital, and improve the experience for patients.

Professor Andrew Hardy, Chief Executive Officer at UHCW, said: “As a Trust we are committed to the future of St Cross.

“We already have some world-leading consultants at Rugby, who are providing innovative surgery like the meniscal transplant, which can prevent younger patients from needing a knee transplant for 15-20 years.

“However, we want to expand the services we provide at the hospital for people across Rugby, Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond.

“This work should enable us to build brand new, world-class operating theatres to improve the care we provide to patients.”

The Trust is considering funding the new facility through a private partnership with a commercial healthcare organisation, citing the ‘challenging financial environment faced by the NHS’ and the need to provide the best deal for taxpayers.

A Trust spokesman said: “Partnerships like this are in use elsewhere in the country, and allow patients to receive high-quality NHS care in state-of-the-art new units.

“The current theatres at the Hospital of St Cross will need to be replaced in coming years to ensure that patients can continue to receive the best care possible.”

The fledgeling plan has been approved by the national governing body NHS Improvement. Further discussions will take place with interested parties, NHS Improvement and representatives from local groups in the autumn.
