Official warnings after coronavirus cases at Coventry Tesco store

CASES of Covid-19 at Tesco Arena Park have prompted warnings from Coventry’s public health officials.

Coventry City Council said the management of the superstore near the Ricoh Arena is working closely with the local authority’s public health officials and Public Health England (PHE) Midlands.

It follows nine confirmed coronavirus cases among the Tesco store’s staff.

Public health agencies have been tracing any contacts of the individuals with the virus, the council added.

Dr Roger Gajraj, Consultant in Communicable Disease Control for PHE Midlands, said: “The management at Tesco Arena Park are cooperating fully with public health professionals to protect the health and wellbeing of their workforce and wider public health. The individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 are all isolating for at least 10 days, with their household members advised to self-isolate for 14 days – as per national guidance.

“Testing is being arranged for the group of staff members identified as being in closer contact with affected individuals. Overnight, the store has performed a deep clean of targeted areas, to reduce risk of infection being spread.”

Liz Gaulton, Director of Public Health for Coventry, said: “This incident is a timely reminder that this pandemic is not over. Everyone still needs to play their part in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

“Over the last two weeks, we have seen a gradual rise in numbers of COVID-19 cases in Coventry. Anyone that shows symptoms should seek a test immediately. If you have been in contact with a confirmed case but are not showing symptoms, you should self-isolate for the full 14 days.

“Don’t become complacent. By not following guidance you could be spreading COVID-19 without knowing it. We should all continue to follow the national advice as we will be living with the virus for the foreseeable future.”

Jamie Tonks, Tesco Coventry Arena Store Manager said: “A small number of colleagues at our store have tested positive for COVID-19. The safety of our colleagues and customers is our number one priority and our team is engaging with Public Health authorities, following their advice and taking all the relevant precautions, including targeted cleaning and arranging testing for colleagues.”
