ONE of England’s greatest cricketers is set to visit Leamington to launch his wine range helping to protect rhinos in South Africa.

Former Wisden Cricketer of the Year and England’s second highest ever one-day wicket taker Darren Gough will visit the Angel Hotel on Saturday April 17.

The bowler – who was nicknamed The Rhino throughout his career – came up with the idea after visiting South African with friend Kevin Pietersen and seeing the devastation caused by poachers.

He will launch his ‘Care for the Wild’ wine range at the venue, which is set to open its outdoor drinking and dining area on the same date.

The Talk Sport presenter says the wines have already won a series of industry accolades for their quality, and now Leamington residents can raise a glass while supporting a good cause after the Angel Hotel became the venue in Warwickshire to stock the wines.

He added: “I have been friends with the Clifford family that owns the Angel Hotel for a very long time and have a real soft spot for the hotel.

“We got talking about their outdoor dining plan and it seemed a great fit for the wines – I will be really proud to see them on sale and hopefully people in Leamington will really enjoy them. I will be joining them for the open of the outdoor area on April 17 and will serve the first few glasses of wine to people ordering them. I can’t wait.”

The Angel also says it is stocking a host of local products including Napton Cider, Newbold Spirit and Warwickshire Beer Company beers.

Director Dan Clifford told the Observer: “Goughie’s wines are great products with a really interesting story, and we want to make people’s experience at the hotel as enjoying as possible.

“We have also created a support local section of the menu to highlight some of the products that come from this area and will provide a much-needed show of support to really innovative businesses from Warwickshire that just need a chance.”
