'Town of animal lovers' welcomes new dog rescue charity shop

A CHARITY which saves abandoned dogs from death row has opened its first shop.

Pawprints Dog Rescue opened its store on Albert Street to provide a regular income and allow volunteers to help even more dogs.

Coun Sally Bragg opened the store to a rapturous reception, with supporters enjoying a half price clothes sale, coffee, cake and even a glass of wine.

Charity spokeswoman Anita Twigger told the Observer: “We are delighted the shop has been received so well by the local community of Rugby.

“As a homegrown charity, we provide direct assistance to all of the strays in the town and the surrounding areas.

“The aim of the charity shop is to provide us with a regular income for sustainability, as we currently exist purely on donations from supporters and fundraising initiatives. With our vets fees alone being in excess of £20,000 per year, we hope the shop can help lift this burden on the charity.”

And they say the future is bright as they hope the extra money means they can rescue and rehome even more dogs which could face death after seven days in council pounds.

Anita said: “Our future goals are to increase the amount of dogs we can help and we can only make this happen with the financial resources required to meet this challenge.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to our army of volunteers who have supported us through this phase. Their dedication and passion for saving dogs’ lives is just amazing, proving that we are a town – if not a nation – of animal lovers.”
