PEOPLE from across the world tuned in to a virtual talk about how Warwickshire labourers migrated to Brazil in the 19th century seduced by promises of land and high wages.
But the reality was that many of the agricultural labourers and their families who made the trip in 1872 died of starvation and illness on the sea voyage.
Those who survived the journey found little waiting for them but hunger and illness, and the riches never materialised
They had been made promises by unscrupulous agents working in England to tempt labourers away from their lives of deprivation.
The talk by Warwick University lecturer Michael Luntley was the first in a programme by Warwickshire Local History Society.
Nearly 40 people, some from as far afield as Wagga Wagga in Australia, logged on to watch and listen.
A society spokesman said: “The talk was thoroughly enjoyed by members, with one commenting it was a ‘fascinating talk with lovely personal insights to bring home the human tragedy.’
The next event will be held online on Tuesday November 17 at 7.30pm and be available to all members.
It will focus on medical historical research relating to Warwickshire and is titled ‘Forged by Fire: Burn Injury and Identity in Warwickshire’.
