CRICKET - Rain frustrates Warwickshire in Lancashire draw

MARK Robinson was left frustrated after bad weather denied Warwickshire a first County Championship win of the season at Lancashire.

Only one hour and a quarter of play was possible on the final day at Old Trafford as the Bears had to settle for another draw.

And Bears head coach Robinson felt his side would have secured their first victory of the season had more play been possible over the course of the match.

Mark Robinson said: “It feels a bit like a loss, there were three or four [players] who refused to go off, they couldn’t believe we were being took off.

“If we’d have played another three quarters of a day or half a day, I think we’d have had a comfortable victory, we were going to get a cracking finish.

“The reduced overs put Lancashire back in the game, we’d have had a bit of a classic and a great finish and we were denied that fun.

“My biggest fear was loss of confidence [from the previous game] but the captain led the way and got us into a good position, it’s a shame.

“The game felt a bit more like us, we had a bit more of an attack, we know we’re going to get stronger.”

Warwickshire posted an impressive 284 in their first innings as captain Alex Davies (127 not out) starred while Jacob Bethell (40) also made a useful contribution.

And the Bears bowled Lancashire out for just 149 as Bethell (4-20), Jake Lintott (3-10) and Olly Hannon-Dalby (3-39) took the wickets.

With the weather restricting the amount of overs left to play, Warwickshire declared on 96-3 in their second innings with Ed Barnard (40 not out) scoring the bulk of the runs.

The Bears led by 231 runs as Lancashire began their second innings as heavy showers swept across the ground throughout the morning which left Lancashire 44 overs to score the required runs.

And the visitors had the home side in trouble on 89-4 as Michael Rae (3-39) put Warwickshire in command.

However, the rain returned at 4.30pm and finally put pay to the fixture.

Warwickshire continue their County Championship campaign against Hampshire from June 23 to 26 at Edgbaston.
