Police investigating after car crossed central reservation on M6 near Rugby

A CRASH in which a car crossed the central reservation of the M6 near Rugby and overturned yesterday (Wednesday July 20) is being investigated by police.

The incident, involving a blue Peugeot 206, happened between junction 1 for Rugby and junction 2 for Coventry just after 11.30am.

A passenger in the car, a woman in her 20s, was airlifted to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire with suspected head injuries.

The driver, a man in his 20s, was taken to the same hospital with suspected arm injuries.

An ambulance transporting a patient to hospital came across the crash shortly after it happened and stopped to provide almost immediate aid – as did an off-duty student paramedic.

Also on the scene were two further ambulances, a paramedic area support officer and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance – which touched down on the motorway.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “When crews arrived they found a blue car that had crossed the central reservation onto the southbound carriageway, suffering significant damage.

“A woman in the car had suffered multiple serious injuries. She was anaesthetised at the scene before being airlifted to the major trauma centre at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire.

“A man in the car suffered shoulder and arm injuries. He was taken to the same hospital by land ambulance.

“Thankfully, no cars travelling south were involved in the crash, otherwise the scene could have been considerably more complex.”

The motorway was closed in both directions between junctions one and two to allow the air ambulance to land and accident investigators to gather information.

Police opened one carriageway each way at the earliest opportunity and the motorway re-opened fully at 2.40pm. They thanked drivers for their patience.

Officers would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash or saw the car, and the manner in which it was being driven, before the collision.

Anyone with information is asked to call Warwickshire Police on 101 quoting incident 166 of July 20.
