FANS of Game of Thrones could find much to their liking in Rugby Theatre’s next production.

Intrigue, passion, love, hate, war and peace feature in The Lion in Winter, set in 1183 in the castle of King Henry II where he lives with his dysfunctional family.

James Goldman’s Tony Award winning play tells the story of the complex relationships between Henry, his wife Eleanor, and their three conspiratorial sons.

The original Broadway production was a stage hit in the mid-1960s, and turned in to an award-winning film starring Peter O’Toole and Audrey Hepburn in 1968.

Darren Pratt and Ruth MacCallum play the lead roles in the production, running from December 12 to 16.

Director Malcolm Fawcett said: “I know people love Game of Thrones, and all of the characters and intrigue in that great TV show. But there’s just as much drama and excitement in this show – and it’s based on real-life events. It’s not someone’s wild fantasy.

“I was captivated when I first saw the film, and being given the opportunity to bring the play version to Rugby audiences has proved a labour of love.

“It has been a richly rewarding journey with my talented cast and production team who have worked tirelessly to bring this wonderful piece to fruition.

“It’s going to be a visual treat and I hope audiences will appreciate the marvellously powerful and witty script and revel in the intrigues, feuds and wranglings which come together in this brilliant play.”
