Classic rib-tickler heading to Rugby Theatre

Rugby Editorial 12th Sep, 2017   0

A COMEDY staple of theatres for the past 80 years is being revived by the team at Rugby Theatre.

When We Are Married by JB Priestley opens for an eight-performance run on Saturday (September 16).

Director Senga Veasey has brought together a cast of Henry Street regulars and newcomers for the Yorkshire rib-tickler.

The year is 1908 and three highly-respectable couples in a small West Riding town are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversaries, having all married in the same chapel on the same day.

The smug complacency of these northern couples – an alderman and town councillor among them – takes a knock when a despised southern chapel organist produces incontrovertible evidence that the cleric who married them wasn’t authorised to do so.

Technically, they have spent the last quarter of a century living in sin.

Senga says: “Initially, each couple reacts with proper Victorian horror – what will the neighbours think?

“But then they find themselves re-evaluating their marriages, while the local paper’s alcohol-soaked photographer records the evening’s events for posterity and a cheeky housekeeper uses the unexpected turn of events to her own advantage.

“The panic, bluster and collapse of stout-parties that ensue are a joy to behold.

“It’s a wonderful piece with some marvellous characters – and I’m so happy to be putting the play on in Rugby.”

The show opens on Saturday, and runs until the following Saturday (September 23).

  • A LITTLE piece of the West End and Broadway is coming to Rugby thanks to a new musical theatre group for adults.

The Interesting Theatre group will ‘get into the habit’ with the feel-good musical comedy Sister Act – based on the 1992 hit film starring Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith – to be staged at Avon Valley School from March 20 to 24.

Auditions will take place at Lawrence Sheriff School on Monday (September 18) at 7.30pm, with callbacks the following evening.

Interesting Theatre is looking for around 25 strong singers, actors and dancers, over 16 and preferably with some knowledge of the show. An audition pack has been prepared and can be requested via their website.

Cast members should be able to rehearse on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from the start of January.

    Visit www.interestingtheatre.org for more details.
