Gender-swapped King Lear opens at Rugby Theatre this weekend

A BOLD new take on a Shakespeare classic is coming to Rugby Theatre.

The Henry Street venue’s amateur group is giving The Bard’s gripping tragedy King Lear a contemporary slant by setting the play in the world of big business.

And in a further twist, the title character is a woman – Sue Morris taking on the role of Lear.

Ash Hirons, who directs the play, said: “The main themes of Lear are very current, which is one reason we chose a modern setting to tell the story.

“Everyone has been fantastically supportive in helping us bring the vision to life. It’s meant I’ve been able to carry the concept through without losing any of the beauty of Shakespeare.

“It has been very rewarding to be able give a lion’s share of roles to women in a play that is traditionally dominated by men. It has brought fresh meaning to many of the scenes.”

King Lear opens for a seven performance run on Saturday (May 4).
