Theatre company to stage Cats for tenth anniversary show

A THEATRE production company is celebrating its tenth anniversary by staging one of the most popular musicals of all time.

Five Star Theatre will stage Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats at the Benn Hall for a four-performance run, starting on Thursday (March 29).

Ethan J Smith, who founded the company in May 2008, will produce, direct and star in the hit musical.

Based on T. S. Eliot’s ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’, the show is set in a larger-than-life junkyard playground, home to feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, the Magical Mr Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and the Old Gumbie Cat who ‘sits and sits and sits’ all day.

The Jellicle Cats tribe come out to play on one special night of the year – the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.

The show features the song Memory, which has been famously covered by Elaine Paige, Barry Manilow and Barbra Streisand.

Performances take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (March 29-31) at 7.30pm at the Benn Hall. There is also a 2.30pm matinee performance on Saturday.

Visit www.bennhall.com or call 01788 533719 for tickets, starting at £11.50.
