AN ACCIDENT blackspot on Rugby’s road’s will be tackled thanks to an £847,000 scheme.
The mini-roundabout linking Lawford Road and Addison Road regularly features on Warwickshire County Council’s (WCC) annual list of junctions with a poor safety record.
There have been 11 injuries due to collisions at the junction over the last five years, mostly due to vehicles failing to give way.
So WCC has approved funding for a casualty reduction scheme which will improve the road layout.
Lawford Road and Addison Road will be realigned into a compact roundabout, replacing the existing mini-roundabout.
Dedicated westbound left turn lanes will be removed, and cycleways will be introduced to keep cyclists away from the road around the junction.
A new puffin crossing will also be added to Lawford Road.
Local county councillors Maggie O’Rourke and Peter Butlin have contributed £64,000 of their delegated budgets towards the scheme, with the remaining £783, 000 coming from WCC’s Capital Improvement Fund.
Coun O’Rourke, who represents New Bilton and Overslade Ward, said: “I’ve been campaigning for improvements at this junction since I was first elected over five years ago. The issue is regularly raised by residents who, I am certain, will welcome the approval of this scheme.”
Coun Butlin, of Admirals and Cawston Ward, added: “Casualty Reduction Schemes such as this are a key element of Warwickshire County Council’s commitment to keep all our residents safe from harm while ensuring our communities are supported by excellent transport infrastructure.
“I have welcomed the opportunity to pool my delegated councillor budget with Cllr O’Rouke in order to fund this necessary scheme.”
A public consultation with local residents will take place later this summer.
