Another ATM targeted following string of raids

THIEVES have targeted another cash machine – the fifth in the area in eight months.

An ATM at a service station near Dunchurch was cut open and its contents stolen around 4am on Wednesday (May 2).

A dark coloured saloon was spotted close to the scene near the A45 in Thurlaston.

Det Con Tom Willett said: “Fortunately no one was injured as a result of this incident, but it was carried out by determined individuals who may have put other road users at risk as they made their escape.

“We will be conducting house-to-house enquiries over the next few days.”

It follows a string of ATM thefts in the borough where machines were targeted in early morning raids.

A cash machine was attacked with explosives at the Post Office on High Street in Hillmorton in February, just three months after another ATM was ripped from the wall outside the Co-op store on the same street.

Burglars also smashed their way into a Brownsover shop and stole an ATM machine last October.

And a Lutterworth Co-op was significantly damaged when thieves broke in and used a gas canister to break open an ATM.

A dark coloured saloon was also spotted following the Lutterworth burglary in September.

Police described the explosive methods as an ‘extremely dangerous tactic’ and the thieves as ‘reckless and extreme’.
