Appeal for friendly faces to visit lonely St Cross patients over Christmas

NO-ONE should be alone at Christmas – that is the message from two charities which have launched a joint appeal for volunteers to visit patients in St Cross Hospital over the festive season.

The Friends of St Cross and Age UK Warwickshire have joined forces to encourage people to spend time with lonely patients.

Visitors to the hospital can enjoy a variety of activities with patients, such as games or arts and crafts.

Chris Seddon, modern matron at St Cross, said: “Unfortunately we will have many patients at St Cross who will not be well enough to be discharged home before Christmas. They may also not have friends or relatives nearby who can visit them.”

Kristine Davies, head of voluntary services for University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust, said: “Our activity co-ordinators work with ward staff and volunteers to keep patients occupied while they’re in hospital. We have seen the benefits these initiatives bring to help patients all year round.”

Anyone interested in volunteering can email [email protected] (if already registered with a volunteering organisation) or visit the hospital’s Outpatients department on Saturday (December 16) between 10am and 12pm (bring photo ID and proof of address).
