Autistic kids from Rugby turn railway children for big day out

Rugby Editorial 19th Nov, 2017   0

AUTISTIC kids from Rugby turned railway children for the day when the Rugby Autism Network (RAN) charity took them on a train adventure.

The charity organised a day out for autistic children to learn about, familiarise themselves with, and build confidence around the railway.

They were treated to a tour of Rugby Station and a train journey to Birmingham International – where they could ride on the monorail or watch planes come and go at Birmingham Airport.

Paul Clarke, a member of RAN’s consultation team, said: “The event went incredibly well.

“As father of a child with autism and an employee of a company that supports those with disabilities, I am keen to get across the message of equality, diversity and inclusion.

“Virgin Trains have provided a wonderful opportunity to support this and members of the Rugby Station team have taken a personal interest in making this a positive experience for everyone. This is great to see and I am very grateful.”

Sarah Borton, Virgin Trains’ Rugby team leader, added: “Days like this are really important to us. It is all about giving people the confidence to travel by train while at the same time having a bit of fun.

“The Rugby Autism Network deserve so much credit for the work they do and we’re delighted to have been able to play our small part.”

Rugby Autism Network provides parent-led support for those living in and near Rugby, offering signposting to specialist services and advice and access to vital experiences such as the railway day.

Run by volunteers and reliant on donations and grants, the charity supports over 130 families and welcomes new members every month.
