Award-winning author talks storytelling with Princethorpe students

AN AWARD-winning author and scriptwriter shared the secrets of his craft with students at Princethorpe College.

Frank Cottrell-Boyce spoke to Year 7 pupils about the inspiration behind his books.

They include Runaway Robot, Cosmic, The Astounding Broccoli Boy and Millions – which won the CILIP Carnegie Medal and was made into a film by Danny Boyle.

Another of his stories, Sputnik’s Guide to Life on Earth, is currently being adapted for the big screen by DreamWorks.

Frank – who was the official scriptwriter for the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony and is also a judge for BBC Radio 2’s 500 Words competition – shared stories from his childhood, read excerpts from his favourite books and answered a host of questions from an enthusiastic audience.

He explained how the shared experience of a book can make the reader feel better, how stories can transport you and how he likes writing comedy because he likes to make people laugh.

Delighted with his appreciative audience, Frank stayed behind after his talk to sign copies of his books.

School librarian Celia Scott said: “We were honoured to have Frank visit Princethorpe. He was so engaging, and Year 7 were mesmerised by his stories and bursting with questions.

“Our thanks go to both Frank and to the Stratford Literary Festival who organised Frank’s visit as part of their special Schools Week.”
