BRAZEN thieves stole a JCB and smashed it into a village shop to steal a cash machine this morning (Thursday July 27).

Police responded to an alarm at the Co-op store in New Road, Stoney Stanton at 2.55am.

The JCB, which had been stolen from Gilmorton earlier that night, was left at the scene and the suspects made off in a dark BMW or Mercedes Estate.

Detective Sergeant Dave Speight of Leicestershire Police’s serious crime team said: “We are in the early stages of our enquiries and are looking into the possibility that this recent incident may be linked to the theft of an ATM from Ashby on July 10 and Thringstone on June 5.

“We are in the process of looking through CCTV from the local area and would urge anyone who may have caught any part of the incident on their private or commercial CCTV cameras to contact us immediately.

“If you were in this area during the early hours of this morning and witnessed the incident or saw anyone acting suspiciously prior to the theft then we’d like to speak to you.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call Leicestershire Police on 101, quoting crime number 17*319722.
