Brownies dig up their past

Rugby Editorial 16th Jul, 2014 Updated: 27th Oct, 2016   0

A TIME capsule buried by a group of Brownies in Hillmorton has been dug up after 25 years.

Current members of the 23rd Rugby Brownies took it out of the ground during their final meeting on Friday before the summer break.

It was buried in a metal biscuit tin wrapped in heavy duty plastic near to the old scout hut on Lower Hillmorton Road, but water had got in so the contents now need to be properly dried out before it can be opened.

They were directed to the site by a letter written three decades ago by then leader Celia Stone who detailed how they had buried the tin at 6.30pm on Monday, January 8, 1990 to mark the organisation’s 75th anniversary, 80-85cm deep in the grounds of the home of 25th Scouts where they also held their meetings.

Her letter added: “We were told to leave instructions that it must remain there until the celebrations of the Brownie centenary year in 2014. We hope the Brownies of 2014 have get fun digging the capsule up and opening it.”

Current group leader Michele McGlinchey told us: “The contents were also wrapped in plastic but had also leaked which meant that we were unable to unwrap them due to them being so soggy.

“Our plan is to carry on opening once it has dried out at our first meeting back after the summer.

“The girls were really excited digging and opening it, and were obviously disappointed that we could not see all the contents.”

In the letter was a photo of the Brownies from back in 1990 and anyone who recognises themselves in it has been urged to get in touch by emailing [email protected].
