Brownsover residents given sneak preview of new surgery

Rugby Editorial 14th Dec, 2018   0

BROWNSOVER residents were given a sneak preview of their new GP surgery, which is due to open next month nearly four years after the area’s old medical centre closed its doors.

They were given a tour of the new £2.3million medical centre, joined by staff from NHS Coventry and Rugby Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which took responsibility for the new surgery in October 2017, and a representative from Healthwatch Warwickshire.

The new medical centre, which covers 624-square metres, includes five consultation rooms, two treatment rooms and a waiting area that can seat up to 34 people. The interior décor was chosen by local patients to represent Rugby Golf Course.

A spokesperson for Brownsover Patient Action Group, which was established in 2015 following the closure of the old Brownsover Surgery to represent the views of local patients, said: “This long-awaited new surgery will bring GP services back to Brownsover. The design, layout and fit of the new surgery are excellent and something the community will hopefully be proud of.

“We look forward to seeing the new centre at the forefront of exemplary practice and medical services.”

Andrea Green, Chief Officer for the CCG, said: “It has been a pleasure to visit the site with local people who have been championing patients’ views on this development, and hear their approval that we have listened and appropriately incorporated their feedback.

“I hope everyone agrees that this is a great investment for the local community”.

Spirit Healthcare Ltd, the provider of GP medical services at the practice, is currently recruiting GPs and other healthcare staff to work at the new site.

Tim Loveridge, Managing Director Clinical Services, Spirit Healthcare said: “We are delighted to have been appointed to provide the GP services. The fact that patients and local residents have been involved in the selection process is hugely important to us.”

The medical centre has been built to serve up to 10,000 patients by 2030, based on expected population growth and new housing developments in the area. A new 100-square metre community centre has also been developed as part of the building, the contract for which was recently awarded to Brownsover Community Association.

Patients currently registered at Rugby Town Medical Practice should by now have received a letter explaining the process for relocating to the new Brownsover Medical Centre. Patient records will be automatically transferred to the new Brownsover Medical Centre and Rugby Town patients will not need to re-register.

Patients who currently attend another practice but would like to register at the new Brownsover Medical Centre can do so once it opens on January 28.

The opening will be two and a half years behind the original schedule.

It was originally due to open in the summer of 2016, before revising the date to early 2018, then to summer 2018, before settling on the current schedule.

Over 10,000 Brownsover residents have been without their local surgery since Brownsover Medical Practice closed in March 2015, and have had to travel over a mile for a GP appointment.
