Champion sailors flock to Draycote Water for annual competition

TOP sailors from around the country came to Draycote Water to take part in an annual competition.

World and national champions were among the crews of 117 boats competing in the Fernhurst Books Draycote Dash regatta.

They enjoyed close racing as part of the first of eight flagship events over the next few months which make up the Selden Sailjuice Winter Series.

They included 28 Draycote sailors including keen youngsters sailing in Toppers and RS Fevas, just two of 47 different types of boat on display.

The four races took place in light and medium winds and sailors were not put off by the light rain which came in during the afternoon.

Winners overall were Colin and Olly Murray from Invergordon Boating Club, sailing a Norfolk Punt, who finished ahead of runners-up Stephen and Sarah Cockerill in an RS 400.

The highest placed Draycote sailor was Norman Byrd, who came 19th in a Phantom.

Club Commodore Jeremy Atkins said: “It was a fantastic event, bringing top sailors from around the country to our club.”
