Charges to increase at Lutterworth's council car parks

CHARGES at council-owned car parks in Lutterworth will go up for the first time in five years on Monday (September 4) as part of a raft of changes designed to ‘future-proof’ parking in the town.

Free parking for an hour will no longer be available at the four car parks – Chapel Street, George Street, Station Road and Church Close – instead costing 60p.

Rates for two, three, four and over four hours of parking will also go up by between 30p and 80p.

Harborough District Council is also introducing improvements which ‘will ensure parking provision works for generations to come’.

New pay and display machines, soon to have cashless payment options, have already been introduced.

Payment by phone options, better layouts and signage, better disabled parking and coach parking, electric vehicle charge points and more ‘pop and shop’ 30 minute bays are forthcoming. It will also be free to park in council-owned car parks on bank holidays.

Harborough District Council environment and regulation spokesman Coun Neil Bannister said: “These improvements will help meet the growing needs of residents, businesses and visitors.

“We need to use our car parks efficiently and effectively and, whilst we have revised car parking charges, they are the first increases in five years and still compare favourably with many similar market towns across the country.”

The council’s new Parking Strategy is based on an independent report which recommended ways parking could meet the future needs of residents, businesses and visitors.
