Charity praises kind kids who went extra mile in foodbank appeal

KIND-hearted kids have been thanked by a national charity for going the extra mile when donating food for hungry people in Rugby.

Pupils at Avon Valley School collected and donated over 300kg of food in response to Rugby Foodbank’s Christmas appeal.

And now two Year 7 students have been thanked by the national charity which supports the Foodbank.

Amelia Ray-Chaudhuri brought in four bulging carrier bags containing 62 items.

And Lili Oliver brought in several boxes laden with food after she designed a poster which was displayed at DHL in Northampton where her mum works. After seeing the poster, her mum’s colleagues donated food which was added to the school’s bumper collection.

Impressed with the pupils’ initiative and effort, the school contacted the Trussell Trust charity – and CEO Emma Revie sent the girls a special ‘thank you’ certificate which was presented to Lili and Amelia in assembly.

Prior to the appeal’s launch, Rugby Foodbank staff delivered assemblies explaining what they do and which items can be donated. Pupils responded by bringing in hundreds of items range from pasta and beans to shortbread and shower gel during a two-week collection.

Head teacher Alison Davies said: “Once again our students have shown their kind and generous nature and have donated a huge quantity of food that will have been put to good use to help people in need.

“I am grateful to the Foodbank’s staff for visiting our students to tell them about the valuable work that they do, and I am grateful to all the parents and families who have supported this initiative.

“It was really nice for the girls to receive a letter and certificate recognising their extra effort from the Trust’s chief executive. I hope they are very proud.”
