Charity stops free urgent vet care for Rugby pets

PET owners in Rugby have been left without urgent vet care after charity PDSA stopped providing free services in the borough.

The charity runs a centre in Coventry where pet owners receiving benefits were previously able to take their animals for free treatment.

But the PDSA – which had a shop in Rugby until the end of last year – says it stopped providing free care for those in Rugby borough as it was not ‘financially viable’.

Those searching the PDSA’s website to find out about receiving treatment are now told Rugby is no longer in the PDSA’s catchment area.

This fact was discovered by a pet owner when her dog fell ill and needed urgent surgery.

After being turned away by the centre she had to find another charity for support.

A spokeswoman for the PDSA said: “As a charity, PDSA receives no government funding and relies on the generosity of our supporters and clients to run our services.

“Following a comprehensive service review last year, it became clear that the current PDSA Pet Practice scheme was no longer financially viable. The decision wasn’t taken lightly and we are doing as much as we can to ensure there is help and support for the owners and pets affected by the change.”

Existing PDSA clients from Rugby are now offered the option to pay £4.50 insurance per month to access vet services.

And for those needing urgent care, it advises owners to contact other charities such as the Blue Cross or RSPCA.

The spokeswoman added: “We have written to all existing PDSA clients to advise them of the options available to them. Any pet owners can contact our Client Services team to discuss their particular situation further.”
