Company chosen to run new Brownsover surgery

A HEALTHCARE company has been chosen to deliver GP services at the new surgery being built in Brownsover.

Spirit Healthcare Ltd has secured a five year contract to run the new medical practice, which is scheduled to open in December.

NHS Coventry and Rugby Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) chose Spirit after what a spokeswoman described as ‘an open and competitive procurement process’ in which bidders were scored against a number of criteria, including how they will support and involve patients in the practice once it opens.

The spokeswoman added: “The CCG has ensured local people have been at the heart of the whole process, including the creation of a Patient Advisory Forum featuring residents from the area and representatives from the community and voluntary sector.”

Several members of the forum took part in the procurement process, which included choosing the patient related questions for the bid, scoring and evaluating responses and interviewing the bidders.

They even helped pick the colour scheme of the new practice, inspired by Rugby Golf Course.

Jake Stevenson, who chairs the Brownsover Patient Action Group created in response to the closure of the original Brownsover practice in March 2015, said: “I’m very happy to see another milestone reached and look forward to welcoming Spirit Healthcare at our new GP practice.

“I was grateful to be involved in such an important process for the community, which I feel was essential to ensure we got the right provider in place to provide services based on local people’s needs.”

Rugby MP Mark Pawsey said: “It is great news that the new Brownsover medical centre is a step closer to opening with the contract having now been awarded to deliver GP services.

“The CCG has worked closely with the Brownsover Patient Action Group throughout the process and it is absolutely right that local residents have had a say on who will provide their local medical care.”

Andrea Green, Accountable Officer for NHS Coventry and Rugby CCG, said: “The contract award is a critical step in securing new GP medical services for the area. We are truly grateful to those residents and patients involved in the planning workshops and Patient Advisory Forum – they have represented the local population’s wants and needs of a new centre.”

The development, comprising a 624 sq m GP surgery, a 100 sq m community facility, parking and landscaping, is two and a half years behind the original schedule.

Over 10,000 Brownsover residents have been without their local surgery since Brownsover Medical Practice closed in March 2015, and have had to travel over a mile for a GP appointment.

NHS England initially promised to open the new surgery in the summer of 2016, before revising the date to early 2018, then to summer 2018, before settling on the current schedule.

NHS Coventry and Rugby CCG, NHS Property Services and NHS England are continuing to work together with local people towards the completion of the project.

Residents have attended a number of engagement events to share their thoughts on what was important to them for the new practice, and a Brownsover Bulletin newsletter – available from Lister’s Chemist in Brownsover – has been created to help keep people up to date.
