Council launches crackdown on illegal parking at Clifton Road bus stops

Rugby Editorial 11th Oct, 2023   0

A CRACKDOWN has been launched on ‘consistently inconsiderate and illegal’ parking at bus stops outside shops in Clifton Road, following a number of collisions and near-misses.

Warwickshire County Council (WCC) is advising residents that parking enforcement is set to increase at the busy section of the road between Railway Terrace and Bath Street.

It comes in response to a number of incidents, including one in which a bus driver was injured as he got off his bus which had been forced to double park at the designated bus stop.

The council is reminding residents that parking at bus stops is strictly forbidden, and that anyone who is caught parking in the bus stops along Clifton Road is liable to be issued with a penalty charge notice.

Coun Sarah Feeney, WCC’s representative for Rugby’s Benn Ward, said: “Enforcement action is always a last resort. However, the consistently inconsiderate and illegal parking along Clifton Road has left the council with very few options, as the actions of a minority of drivers are putting other people’s safety in jeopardy.

“We want people to support the local businesses and will be looking to work with them so that this can be done safely.”

The council’s transport spokesman Coun Jan Matecki said: “Parking in bus stops is against the law and can lead to disruption and, in the recent case, injury. We would kindly ask drivers to consider this, or risk being fined, when visiting the shops on the Clifton Road.”

The council advised drivers looking to visit the shops on the stretch of Clifton Road that free on-street parking is available in nearby Moultrie Road, and car parks are located nearby at Gas Street, Railway Terrace and the John Barford multi-storey.
