MOBILE phone signals are being used to measure the number of visitors to Lutterworth.
Harborough District Council (HDC) is using state-of-the-art footfall counters to measure unique phone signals, to show what days and times of the week are busy, how long shoppers are staying in town, and where the hotspots are which attract the most visitors.
The council says successful market towns are important to the local economy and the footfall data provided will give a better picture of shopper and visitor behaviour, trends and changes.
Coun Phil Knowles, HDC’s leader and spokesman for culture, leisure, economy and tourism, said: “Understanding the footfall patterns in our town centres is crucial for making informed decisions that support our local businesses and enhance the overall experience for residents and visitors.
“This investment shows we value our town centres and want them to continue to thrive.”
The project has received £69,700 for three years from the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
The council has also revamped the Visit Harborough website to help people find accommodation, activities, shopping, attractions and leisure.
HDC has made the site – which had over 30,000 visitors in 2023 – easier to browse and navigate.
Coun Knowles said: “It’s important that we make it easy to find out what’s here and what exciting events are planned to attract more people to enjoy our mix of great heritage and leisure, culture and adventure.”
The project has received £3,625 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
