County artists open doors for free two-week event

Rugby Editorial 16th Jun, 2018   0

ARTISTS will be opening their doors to welcome visitors during Warwickshire Open Studios.

More than 270 artists across the county have signed up across 138 venues for this year’s free event running from Saturday (June 16) to July 1.

A spokesman said: “The idea of walking up to a stranger’s front door might seem a little daunting, but there really is no need as that’s what Open Studios is all about.

“Artists love chatting about their work, getting feedback or perhaps discussing a commission. Many are exhibiting their creations for the very first time, or trying out a new style or medium, so they’re likely to be just as nervous.

“Whether you’re looking for creative inspiration or to purchase a unique piece of art direct from the artist, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

“As well as all the new artists taking part this year, those you may have visited previously will be exhibiting new pieces. And although most of the art on show will be for sale, there genuinely is no obligation or expectation to buy – simply for you to enjoy.”

And Warwickshire Open Studios has a new patron in celebrated Kenilworth-based screenwriter Andrew Davies, whose credits include Pride & Prejudice, House of Cards and Middlemarch among many others.

Commenting on his involvement, Mr Davies said: “Creativity is hugely important to everybody. It’s so good for people to participate in events like this, both as artists and also as those supporting local artists.

“The event is a fantastic opportunity for people to see a great range of interesting work in all kinds of media, and to meet some of Coventry and Warwickshire’s brightest emerging and established artists. I’ve been going to Open Studio events for years – I like to get around as many studios as I can.”

* SIX artists will be exhibiting together in Rugby during Warwickshire Open Studios.

They will be showing their work at The Barn in Houlton, off the A428 Rugby to Crick Road, on the old masts site, over the three weekends showcasing county artists, from 10am to 5pm daily.

Those displaying their work will be Sarais Crawshaw (wildlife and countryside artist), Ditherella’s Workshop (silver jewellery), Jennie Fletcher (oil landscapes), Ruth Lyne (glass jewellery), Gillian Western (watercolour paintings) and Carol Wheeler (mixed media and silk scarves).

Visitors will be able to watch demonstrations and stories behind the work, and there will be live music on Saturday morning (June 16).
