Crescent School enjoying sporting success

SPORTING success on the pitch and in the pool is being enjoyed at a Rugby primary school.

The Crescent School is celebrating a cricketer being selected for Warwickshire’s development squad and two swimmers making a national championships.

Women’s cricket is on the up after England won the world cup – and Georgia Dowling could one day be helping them to further glory.

She took her first step after being selected for Warwickshire’s Development of Excellence Cricket Squad for under-11 girls.

Georgia has been playing cricket since she was seven years old. She currently plays for Oakfield Cricket Club in Rugby, in their under-11 hardball team.

Georgia was a key member of the school’s under-11 team last summer and was nominated for the county trials by the Bawnmore Road school’s head of sport Matt Phillips.

The selection took place over three consecutive Sunday mornings and the girls played in the nets and took part in two matches.

Georgia impressed the coaches with her all-round excellent play, and was among 18 girls selected for the squad.

She will now train weekly at Edgbaston over the winter, with a view to being selected for the summer squad to play matches against other counties.

Matt said: “We are very proud of Georgia, she is a talented and exciting cricketer and this is a great opportunity for her. We look forward to following her progress over the winter in the Development Squad.”

Georgia was more modest about her achievements.

She said: “I just enjoy playing cricket.”

Being selected for the Development Squad is a real achievement as the squads are a pathway onto the Regional and National Academy programmes.

And swimmers Jamie Capelett and Marco Rodriguez Hernandez are aiming to make a national splash.

Marco Rodriguez Hernandez and Jamie Capelett are preparing to take the plunge at the Independent Schools’ National Championship.

Jamie and Marco are preparing to compete in the Independent Schools’ National Championships taking place at the London Olympic Aquatics Centre on Sunday (January 21).

The pair qualified through the midlands gala held in November.

Jamie qualified for the Year 5 Freestyle Relay and Marco for the Year 4 Freestyle Relay.
