Cruel fraudsters pose as police officers to con money out of Rugby residents

CRUEL fraudsters have been posing as Rugby police officers to con money out of unsuspecting residents.

On Wednesday (November 1), a number of Rugby residents reported receiving calls from someone claiming to be from Rugby Police Station, asking for their bank details, or asking them to withdraw or transfer money.

Warwickshire Police said the police or a bank would never contact people out of the blue asking for personal details, requesting money to be transferred for fraud reasons, asking for cash to be withdrawn and given to someone for safe keeping, or sending someone to collect cash, bank cards, account details or PIN numbers.

In addition to the would-be victims from Rugby, a Nuneaton woman in her 70s was called and told to transfer £6,000 – but the bank blocked the transaction.

A Warwickshire Police spokesperson said: “If you receive a call from someone out of the blue claiming to be from the police and asking for your banking details or money, please hang up the phone and report it. Do not give out any personal information to the caller.

“Often these types of fraudsters target elderly and vulnerable people who may not use social media, so please share this advice with friends and family.”
