Devoted headteacher steps down after 35 years in education

A DEVOTED Headteacher at a Rugby secondary school has called time on her long career in education.

Alison Davies, the head of Avon Valley School and Performing Arts College, is retiring after 35 years in teaching.

Miss Davies joined Avon Valley as Deputy Headteacher in 2007, and was appointed Headteacher in 2014.

She began her career as a maths teacher in 1988, and has worked at a number of schools in Yorkshire and the Midlands throughout her long career including Campion School in Northamptonshire.

During her time as head of Avon Valley School, she introduced the school’s House system, steered the school through two Ofsted inspections, led staff and students through the pandemic and lockdowns, and oversaw a number of successful school shows.

At the school’s annual awards evening, Chair of Governors Janet Gilbert thanked Miss Davies for her dedication, devotion and commitment to the school and its students throughout her tenure.

Miss Davies said: “Deciding to retire, and stepping away from Avon Valley, was a difficult decision. The school has been a huge part of my life for many years and I feel incredibly lucky to have been its Headteacher.

“Our school has a wonderful community that I am proud of and I will be very sad to leave. It’s been an incredible privilege to teach and be involved in the lives of so many wonderful students, and I’ll miss working with them and seeing their success.

“I have also been privileged to work with so many amazing colleagues who I will also miss greatly.”

Miss Davies plans to continue to work part time within school improvement, and to spend more time enjoying her hobbies of gardening and horse riding.

She has promised to keep in touch with Avon Valley and will return to see the next school show.
