Effort equals success for young mathematicians

TALENTED mathematicians from Avon Valley School have been presented with certificates following their participation in a national Maths Challenge.

Over 100 students from the school took part in the UK Mathematics Trust’s annual Junior Maths Challenge – with seven receiving a silver award and 19 receiving a bronze certificate.

Among them were Year 8 student Archie Twentyman, who picked up a silver certificate and took the accolade of ‘Best in School’ and ‘Best in Year’, and Year 7 student Lucy Hands who was also awarded a silver certificate and named ‘Best in Year’.

The Junior Maths Challenge is a 60-minute multiple-choice challenge sat in exam conditions, which encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.

Maths teacher Esther Quarmyne, who organised the entrants at Avon Valley, said: “I am really proud of all the students who took part and had a go at the competition. I was really pleased to learn that 26 of our students were awarded a certificate following their involvement.”

Head teacher Alison Davies said: “Once again it is good to see so many of our students getting involved in this opportunity. I am proud of everyone who took part and I am delighted to see so many students receiving a certificate.”

Each year the UK Mathematics Trust, a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics, runs a junior, intermediate and senior maths challenge for students across the United Kingdom. Last academic year over 600,000 pupils from 4,000 schools took part in the three individual challenges, which are the UK’s biggest national maths competitions.
