ONE of the first students to join the WMG Academy for Young Engineers has laid the final bricks as work on the buildings reached its highest point.
Emily Rooney, who is currently at Rugby High School, took part in the topping out ceremony as part of the countdown to the university technical college on Mitchell Avenue in Coventry next to Westwood Academy welcoming its first students in September.
The 16-year-old will join in year 12 and will study maths, physics, art and engineering.
Eventually the academy will have more than 600 pupils on its roll, specialising in training the next generation workers for the engineering and manufacturing industries.
It will be open to 14 to 19-year-olds from Coventry, Warwickshire and Solihull and is backed by Warwick University as well as 40 firms including Jaguar Land Rover, IBM and National Grid, and the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce.
Principal Kate Tague said: “The new WMG Academy for Young Engineers building has really exceeded all my expectations. It is an amazing facility, with innovative learning bases and some of the latest in design and manufacturing technology.
“We are particularly proud of the open workshop on the ground floor, which will allow students to follow the whole engineering process from computer-aided design through to manufacture.”
