‘UNBELIEVABLE’ excuses for not staying at home have been heard by Rugby police officers today (Tuesday March 24) – including an ‘essential shopping trip’ to buy a packet of crisps.
A spokesperson for the town’s police force pleaded for some residents to take the Coronavirus lockdown more seriously to ‘protect vulnerable lives’, after dispersing a number of social gatherings of more than two people.
They said: “People are not listening to government advice, which only puts themselves and others at risk.
“We’ve had some unbelievable excuses. Going out to get a single bag of crisps is not an essential shopping trip.
“The more people that don’t follow the restrictions means this horrible situation will go on for longer and more lives will be lost.”
Police today dispersed groups of people drinking in the grounds of St Andrews Church and in Regent Street, and were called to the town centre on reports of other gatherings.
The spokesperson added: “We are in a national health emergency. Everyone has their part to play regarding social distancing. This will help prevent the spread of Covid-19 and reduce the impact on the NHS.
“Please, please take the government’s advice so we can beat this together.”
