A FORMER rugby star helped a team of students scrum down and get stuck into a DIY project with a difference.
Students from the Avon Valley School and Performing Arts College volunteered to work alongside ex-England and Wasps player James Haskell on a project at Coventrians RFC.
James helped the students refurbish the rugby club’s changing facilities and install fencing.
It was part of the ‘Volunteer it Yourself’ project, which gives young people aged 14-24 the opportunity to learn vocational trade skills, gain a qualification and improve their employability while volunteering to help the community.
Upon completion, having been mentored by local professional tradespeople, each student was awarded an entry level City and Guilds certificate.
Avon Valley head teacher Alison Davies said: “I am really pleased that these students have had the opportunity to be involved with the VIY project, which has allowed them to learn practical skills, gain a qualification and meet a world-class sports star.
“I am sure it will be an experience they will remember for a long time to come.”
